Veo aun con
perplejidad como las autoridades de la NFL le han seguido el juego a Trump y
deciden de un libretazo que los jugadores no pueden arrodillarse ante la
bandera y el himno en señal de protesta. Tengo claro que esta decisión está
precedida de un estudio de mercado que valora en cuanto afecta el comentario
vocinglero del presidente a las ganancias
de este deporte. Sé que es tan
inconstitucional como que los estudiantes juren la “promesa de lealtad” y que no va a resistir
el desafío judicial que vendrá. Y a los que hablan de las reglas de una
organización privada les recuerdo que no existe requisito de ninguna
organización que pueda reemplazar la garantía de libertad de expresión de la
Constitución de los Estados Unidos.
Es irónico y
triste que alguna gente le siga el discurso de patriotismo a Trump, viniendo de
un hombre que eludió servir a su país cuando le tocaba hacerlo. Entiendo que los inmigrantes hispanos y
sobretodo los cubanos se agarren a la bandera y a otros símbolos patrios con
más fuerza que los niños héroes mexicanos.
Pero no es el caso de Estados Unidos, un país que comenzó con la
protesta contra los impuestos en la llamada “Fiesta del té”. Un país que lleva
la rebelión y la libre expresión en su historia y sus huellas más profundas. Un
país donde quemar la bandera en muestra de reprobación no constituye un delito.
No puede ser un patriotismo más barato y populista ese que no critica el uso de
la bandera en ropas interiores y trajes de baño.
La votación es
patriótica. Ayudar a tu comunidad es patriótico. Aprender sobre la constitución
es patriótico. Defender a tu país del ataque de un enemigo es patriótico. Ese
ha sido siempre el espíritu de esta nación que se está viendo socavado día a día
con exigencias autoritarias nunca vistas.
Arrodillarse es
una vieja forma digna y respetuosa para mostrar desacuerdo con alguna
injusticia y no esta dirigida contra la bandera o el himno. Arrodillarse no
afecta de ninguna manera el rendimiento de los deportistas pagados por su equipo.
No hace mucho, en
la Alemania nazi se encarcelaba y condenaba a quien no saludaba al Führer. Por eso,
hay que defender nuestras libertades no sea que un día terminemos todos de
rodillas.
A los cubanos
solo recordarles las palabras del más grande de los patriotas, nuestro José Martí:
“La patria necesita sacrificios. Es ara y no pedestal. Se la sirve, pero no se
la toma para servirse de ella.”
I still see with perplexity how the NFL authorities have
followed the game of Trump and decide from a “flight by night” move that the
players cannot kneel before the flag and the anthem in protest. I am clear that
this decision is preceded by a market study that assesses how much the
president's vociferous comment affects the profits of this sport. I know it is
as unconstitutional as the students swearing the Pledge of Allegiance and that
it will not withstand the judicial challenge that will come. And to those who
talk about the rules of a private organization, I remind you that there is no
requirement of any organization that can replace the guarantee of freedom of
expression in the Constitution of the United States.
It is ironic and sad that some people follow Trump's
patriotism speech, coming from a man who shied away from serving his country
when it was his turn to do so. I understand that Hispanic immigrants and above
all Cubans cling to the flag and other national symbols more strongly than the Mexican
child heroes. But it is not the case of the United States, a country that began
with the protest against taxes in the so-called "Tea Party". A
country that carries rebellion and free expression in its history and its
deepest footprints. A country where burning the flag in a show of disapproval
does not constitute a crime. It cannot be a cheaper and populist patriotism
that one which does not criticize the use of the flag in underwear and
swimsuits.
The vote is patriotic. Helping your community is patriotic.
Learning about the constitution is patriotic. Defending your country from the
attack of an enemy is patriotic. That has always been the spirit of this nation
that is being undermined day by day with authoritarian demands never seen
before.
Kneeling is an old dignified and respectful way to show
disagreement with some injustice and is not directed against the flag or the
anthem. Kneeling does not affect in any way the performance of the athletes
paid by their team.
Not long ago, in Germany, the Nazis imprisoned and condemned
those who did not greet the Führer. That is why we must defend our freedoms or we
all end up on our knees one day.
To the Cubans we only remember the words of the greatest
patriot, our José Martí: "The country needs sacrifices. It is an altar and
not a pedestal. It is served, but it is not taken to make use of it. "
