I read with revulsion, but without amazement,
comments on my wall and others that demonstrate the existence of a profile that
is far from that chauvinistic and mellow hymn of Marisela Verena of "We
Cubans" which is nothing more than a distorted and inflated image of an
identity that is much more complex and difficult to define.
We are no different from any other people that
also share achievements and heroics history along with miserliness and
betrayals. We're human beings like the rest of us. And if anything differences
us is the experience of having suffered, to a greater or lesser degree, the
exposure to a totalitarian system, for which we are all involved or
responsible, even if we feel insulted when denying this. If we look for similarities, we have points of
contact with those East Germans full of victimism and nostalgic for state
paternalism triggering in frustration that is reflected in the greater number
of racist aggressions in all of Germany and in the fact that one in four East
Germans votes for the neo-Nazi far-right. Or perhaps the Poles whose majority
of young people applaud the Law and Justice Party (PiS), an ultra-conservative,
nationalist and confessional formation in the European 21st century.
But
Cubans are added the possibility of changing color, an adaptive condition that
until now was believed to be unique to chameleons. Thus, a newcomer to Miami
confesses, forty-eight hours after her arrival, that her hair battered with
washing soap for years does not tolerate any shampoo other than Thermosilk. Or
one who lives in the suburbs of Madrid his first two weeks of emigrating
incorporates, not the local words necessary for communication as ¨maja¨ or ¨vale,
but a ridiculous imitation of Sara Montiel's accent in La Violetera. And a guajiro from Remanganaguas currently in
asylum in Kentucky in June, celebrates the American independence of the Fourth
of July with a profusion of flags and starry caps included, but without having
the slightest idea of the democratic Declaration of U.S. Rights.
Chromatophores that allow color change are not
only external on the skin. They affect the memory of the Cuban and make it confabulate
with ease. It was this capacity which caused
many Puerto Ricans years ago to call the Cuban émigrés "the people of the
had" because they all had latifundios, castles and even noble titles.
Similarly, an old Cuban communist militant changes the sense of his red color
and turns it into a purely bred republican and a patriot warrior who screams
for interventions and the asphyxiation of those he left behind. If Fernando
Ortiz were to live, he would do new sociological studies to expand his concept
of transculturation and would add to the different levels of destruction,
survival, domination, resistance, support, modification and adaptation of
native cultures, new elements of shamelessness, falsehoods and stupidity. These are the features which artificially
divide a population into several strata of hatred according to whether or not
they live in their born place, the country or city where they are or their date
of emigration, pretending to be better than others with an attitude that only
makes us worse at all. What totalitarianism
leaves behind.
